About Me
My Jazz Story
I love jazz because...I am a double bass player, producer and composer, playing primarily “jazz” during my 40+ year career, and leading, playing on and/or producing 18
albums as CEO/founder of Owlsong Productions. After 18 years of a successful regional playing career, I dropped out to attend Georgetown Law School in 1994 and
became a technology transactions and policy lawyer and kept playing occasionally. Returning to full-time musicianship in 2016, I have played throughout the world.
Bass mentors have included Milt Hinton, Ray Brown, John Clayton, Bruce Gertz, Rufus Reed, Francois Rabbat and Lynn Seaton. I have worked as a leader and a sideman
with famous creators such as Anita O’Day, Joe Henderson, Herb Ellis, James Moody, Mickey Roker, Gus Johnson and Huberal Herrera. The Alan Lewine Xtet was
featured playing my compositions at the 2020 Havana International Jazz Festival, and later that year Ansonica Records released Sephardic Treasures with Soprano
Meets Bass, co-led with Ana María Ruimonte, and submitted it for Grammy? considerations. Alan also served for over 6 years on the Board of Directors of
Philadelphia’s Jazz Bridge Project (leading the Philadelphia Real Book project among others), and over 10 years on the Executive Board of the International Society of
Bassists (ISB), paying it forward with his musical, business and legal acumen and 35 years of experience on various non-profit boards. In mid-2020, Alan relocated
with Ana María from Philly to Phoenix, AZ, from where they explored the southwest US and Latin American opportunities for creative original music, often beyond
genre.
in July 2025, we relocated to Ana Maria's hometown, Madrid, Spain.
