About Me
After briefly joining a jazz & blues combo in Copenhagen in the late '60s as vocalist & harmonica player playing blues standards, covering Mose Alison material and putting what we then called jazz poetry lyrics together for Thelonius Monk numbers such as 'Blue Monk' I returned to London to take part in a multi-media project, 'Factory' which was a mix of written prose, graphics and music highlighting an alternative take on the city.
I then ran Mayfair's award winning Dover Street Restaurant & Bar for nearly 30 years setting up a 6 nightly program of jazz, blues & soul program whilst hosting social book launch autobiographies for musicians such as Humphrey Lytteltons' 'It Just Occurred To Me' and Elkie Books' 'Finding My Voice'and organising charity nights for Children In Need, The Royal Variety Club and Help A London Child in conjunction with the then fledgling Jazz FM.
I advised the St Lucia Tourist Board on bands for their 2011 and 2012 Jazz Festivals and broadcast live from the festivals for BBC Radio London and covered the festivals for TTG (Travel Trade Gazette) when I was shortlisted in the BestTravel Writer category for the 2012 St Lucia Gala Awards.
In 2012 I was appointed Music & Features Editor for the Player International Magazine for whom I covered festivals in Tobago, Nevis, St Kitts, Malta and Mallorca over the next few years in conjuction to writing music and travel pieces for the Sunday Times and TTG and becoming an occasional guest broadcaster on the Breakfast show for Radio One Mallorca.
In 2014 I re-launched the legendary Bull's Head Jazz Club in Barnes with the Claire Martin Trio along with special guest guitarist Jim Mullen and subsequently broadcasting on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Lineup show. In the same year I was nominated for the Malta Press Awards for an article I wrote on the Malta International Jazz Festival and the city of Valletta for TTG.
In 2015 I put together a 'Magic Of Motown' showcase over at the SSE Wembley Arena for the NFL American football weekend In 2019 I started to program jazz and blues over at a new London venue, in the Boston Room over at Chiswick's George IV which continued after the pandemic ended and still continues to this day as a succesful jazz and blues destination.
In 2022 I took a 10-piece Tamla Motown band over to Belfast to perform at Belfast Town Hall for the Illinois and Michigan Travel Boards end of conference event. Itv was such a hit that I am now working on setting up a 9-piece jazz Nonet for a mini- tour next year.
In the meantime I am still putting on live jazz and blues shows over at the Bull's Head and in the Boston Room whilst still aiming to cover more jazz festivals whenever and wherever.
