Daniele Nasi
Daniele Nasi is a tenor and soprano saxophone player from Reggio Emilia, Italy. His musical education began with the piano at the age of 5. After moving back to Italy, from Chicago (USA), where he grew up, at the age of 9 he decided to pick up the saxophone after listening to some Charlie Parker LPs and falling in love with the sound of the instrument. He studied in private schools until he enrolled in the Jazz Saxophone Bachelor program at "A. Boito" Conservatory in Parma, with Emiliano Vernizzi as a teacher, and graduated cum laude in 2017. After that he attended and completed his studies with a Master's degree at the “Prins Claus Conservatorium" in Groningen (NL), with Michael Moore and Marc Van Roon as his main teachers. Here, and in NY as part of the Master's program, he had the possibility to study with musicians such as: David Binney, Melissa Aldana, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Mark Shim, Jon Irabagon, Tivon Pennicott, David Berkman, Steve Nelson, Gene Jackson, Johannes Weidenmeuller, Rogerio Boccato, Greg Fishman, Michael Philip Mossman, Don Braden, Matt Wilson, Jack Walrath, Conrad Herwig, Dave Stryker and others. He also attended Masterclasses with Steve Coleman, Tor Yttredal, Misha Alperin, Morten Halle and summer clinics such as "Umbria Jazz Clinics" in 2015, with Dino Govoni, and "Nuoro Jazz Seminary" in 2016 with Emanuele Cisi and Joe Lovano. In his first years as a musician he started playing in a Ska-jazz band called "Empatee du Weiss", with which he had the possibility to go on tour around Europe, playing in the UK (Boomtown Fair, Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Secret Garden), Spain (Iboga Festival and Barcelona), the Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic and Austria, aside from Italy, and recorded two albums. During those years, with some colleagues they set up a jazz 4tet of original music called "Ejad", with which they are still performing. Alongside these projects he was also playing as a sideman in many different jazz or latin/jazz projects and in a couple of Big Bands ("Mephisto Ensamble" and "PMI Big Band"; also the "Parma Jazz Orchestra" for a short period before leaving for Groningen). While in Groningen, he played in many projects as a leader or a sideman, the most relevant being: "BSDE 4tet", with which he won the Zelioli Prize at Albinea Jazz in 2019 and most recently recorded the album “Elevating Jazz Music. Vol 1”, to be published in 2022 with the label GleAM Records; "FrankieZ eXperiment", with which he had the possibility to play in festivals and venues in Romania (such as Jazz TM in Timisoara, Jazz in the Park in Cluj Napoca and others);“DN electric 5tet”; "Mau Mau"; “Quique Ramirez 5tet”, and many others.
