Matt Christopher
Matt Christopher is a young powerhouse lead and commercial trumpet player whose sound is deeply rooted in the high-energy traditions of big band jazz. With influences spanning from the soaring, authoritative lead of Conrad Gozzo to the silky, effortless phrasing of Snooky Young, and the electrifying brilliance of Maynard Ferguson, Matt brings a commanding presence to every performance. His playing combines technical mastery with an instinctive musicality that allows him to shape and drive a brass section with confidence and precision.
Growing up in SW Virginia, his high school band director (also a trumpet player) solidified his love for the art of big band and the world of music beyond school. He was instrumental in giving Matt a wide variety of knowledge of trumpet players, styles, and opportunities.
A true chameleon in the jazz world, Matt has performed with a wide variety of big bands and ensembles, seamlessly adapting to different styles, from hard-swinging Basie charts to the high-intensity demands of modern commercial music. His ability to blend power, finesse, and stylistic authenticity makes him a sought-after player in both traditional and contemporary jazz settings. Whether delivering razor-sharp lead trumpet work, executing nuanced section playing, or cutting through a mix with searing solos, Matt thrives in any musical environment.
Currently performing with multiple groups up and down the east coast, but happily based in Boston, Massachusetts, Matt continues to refine his craft, bringing his bold sound, versatility, and deep respect for jazz tradition to every stage. His passion for the instrument and dedication to the art form make him a dynamic young force in today’s big band and commercial music scene.
