Joe Brent

Called, “one of the truly exceptional musicians of his generation,” a mandolinist about whom it has been said, “there has never been a mandolinist with greater technical skills,” and a composer whose music, “touches and communicates the essence of what it means to be an alive, feeling human being,” Joe Brent has forged a career as both instrumentalist and composer with unparalleled fluency across multiple genres.

As a classical mandolinist, Mr. Brent has worked closely with many of the great modern composers, premiering works by Elliot Carter, Pierre Boulez, Magnus Lindberg, Olga Neuwirth, David Loeb, Nathan Davis, and Joe Hisaishi among many others. He has performed with many well-known chamber ensembles, including The International Contemporary Ensemble, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Argento New Music Project, Speculum Musicae, A Far Cry, Fireworks Music, Art of Élan, Tres Americas, NOVUS, and nunc. Concurrently, he is thoroughly versed in the traditional orchestral repertoire, having performed with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony, New World Symphony, The American Symphony Orchestra, and the New York City Ballet and City Opera. As a solo artist, he has given recitals and clinics in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, made his Carnegie Hall solo debut in 2001, has lectured on contemporary music at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and was the 2017 artist in residence at Marble House Project.

9 Horses

9 Horses is an improvising chamber ensemble featuring Joe Brent (formerly of Regina Spektor’s band) on acoustic and electric mandolin, 2018 GRAMMY nominee Sara Caswell (Esperanza Spalding) on violin and Hardanger d'amore, and Andrew Ryan (Kaia Kater) on bass. Featuring Brent's original compositions and the incendiary, genre-hopping virtuosity of all three members, the trio at the core of 9 Horses represents their vision of a musical future with no barrier between 'folk art' and 'fine art', and as an ensemble are capable of communicating this idea through musical canvases both great and small.

Michael Lampert

Michael Lampert received his BA in music theory and composition from Drew University, and his Master of Music in Musicology from the New England Conservatory of Music. He has studied jazz and improvisation with Harry Leahey, John Carter, Dave Pike and Charlie Banacos; his principal instructors on the mandolin have been Ben Buccola, Andy Statman, and Robert Paul Sullivan. He has also studied classical domra with the distinguished artist Iryna Orlova. Michael has appeared in numerous clubs and concerts throughout the United States, performing with the eclectic fusion band Blue Fish, The Barbara Reed Quartet, singer/songwriter Michele Cummings and the Lenny Carlson Trio, in addition to leading his own duos, trios and quartets

Dave Gross

Sims Delaney-Potthoff

Sims Delaney-Potthoff, Harmonious Wail's founder, leader and mandolinist , credits Jethro Burns with the band's unique, enticing style of mandolin-driven gypsy-jazz. Sims studied for seven years with Burns, the legendary jazz mandolinist, laying the foundation for Harmonious Wail's acoustic string sound. He furthered his studies with Matt Glaser at Boston's Berklee College of Music, honing his skills while immersing himself in the "gypsy" music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli (Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Bireli Lagrene, Duane Allman, David Grisman, and Louis Armstrong are also on his list of musical heroes)

Chris Thile

Born: February 20, 1981

Thanks for Listening began as a simple idea: To document, in a studio setting, the tunes that singer, songwriter, and mandolinist Chris Thile had composed for the new ��Song of the Week�� segment of public radio��s A Prairie Home Companion during his inaugural season as host. Thile had set himself a formidable musical challenge and, as befits this enthusiastically risk-embracing artist, he was more than up to the task. In addition to traveling, planning, rehearsing, and performing on the fifteen episodes of APHC��s 2016�C17 season, Thile managed each week to create a funny, topical, and at times quite poignant new song he would play with a rotating cast of APHC band-mates and guest stars

August Watters

August Watters is a multi-stylistic, improvising mandolinist, composer/arranger, and teacher in the Boston area. He has performed with some of the leading figures in today��s revival of this most elegant instrument, and the advancement of its musical traditions. His work as an interpreter, improviser, composer and arranger bridges contemporary classical music, jazz, folk music traditions, and the historical concert mandolin repertoire. As an international clinician and soloist, Watters has performed in Italy, Germany, England, the Czech Republic, England, Canada, and the United States. He is also an Emmy award-winning arranger, with dozens of studio credits as arranger, orchestrator and conductor for television and film music
