About: The Finnish guitar and double bass duo Martin S?derbacka & Eevalotta Matikainen released a new jazz album consisting of eight original instrumental pieces. The album features one of Finland’s foremost musicians, tenor saxophone player Joonatan Rautio on two of the eight tracks and the great drummer David Lyttle from Ireland on one track. Guitarist Martin S?derbacka and bassist Eevalotta Matikainen have worked together as a duo since 2011 and ”Northern Sky” contains selected pieces that they have composed between 2012 and 2022. The Music: Martin’s and Eevalotta’s compositions resonate in a clear sound of the Nordic landscapes while still relying on the harmonies and swing of the American jazz tradition. The music on the album can be described as contemporary jazz with Scandinavian flavours that sets a playground for the musicians to create rhythmic and harmonic adventures. Guitarist Martin S?derbacka and bass player Eevalotta Matikainen are known to perform atmospheric and multifaceted music that strongly lives in the moment combined with straight ahead swing. The duo often utilizes effect pedals and the diversity of sounds from their instruments to create a unique sound as a duo. The Process: The album was recorded at ELive Music Studios in Finland at the beginning of year 2024. The session was done with the guitar in one room and the double bass in an other room. Martin and Eevalotta recorded a few versions of all songs and selected their favorite takes of the songs for the record. The saxophone and drum tracks were overdubbed by the featured musicians at their home studios. On the last track of the album Martin overdubbed a comp guitar for the solo and a few guitar volume swell tracks to create soundscapes throughout the song. The album was made in house at ELive Music Studios in Finland, from recording to mastering.
