Best Jazz Albums of 2025: All-Star Break Edition

by AAJ Staff
As we hit the halfway mark of 2025, All About Jazz has adopted Major League Baseball's All-Star break approach but swapping homers for albums. Our team of 55 writers convened to name their top three albums of the year so far, with Mary Halvorson's About Ghosts (Nonesuch) emerging as the clear favorite and an early contender for album of the year. Her collaboration with Sylvie Courvoisier (Bone Bells, Pyroclastic Records), also earned spots on a few lists. Other notables include ...

The list I have compiled does not follow any order of preference. The albums are organized alphabetically by artist. In my opinion, every album on this list is of great interest. I decided to include a few U.S. albums, though I had to leave out many other deserving ones, as well as three Italian albums that I believe deserve greater international recognition. There is not much to add to this list, other than noting note that the order is alphabetical and, of course, does not reflect any ranking of merit. Without a doubt, 2024 has given us a wealth of wonderful music to listen to and revisit. Unfortunately, many noteworthy albums had to remain beyond the limit of ten CDs; in many cases, their inclusion or exclusion came down to highly subjective criteria, which could very well change in an hour or ...

This year, I have noticed, with surprise and appreciation, an higher than usual number of remarkable albums. Many are listed below. I will leave it for readers to decide whether this is a sign of the high quality of recent releases or a decline in my critical ...

Music that resonates with a listener is a rare gift for that receiver. And the artists who create it are to be admired for all that they produce and bestow. It's important to never lose sight of those truths and the power of aural art. I can't truly say that I believe that any release is the best," since that epithetical ideal, ranking system and all, doesn't and shouldn't apply to music. But I can say that ...

From the 200 or so discs that I heard in 2024, here are the ten new issues and three gems saved from obscurity, which gave me the most pleasure. As always these selections are entirely subjective, and take no account of the many other albums which I would no doubt have loved if I had heard them. So perhaps it's better to view these selections as a chance to pick up on something that you might otherwise have missed. As ...

A terrific year for new jazz releases, the breath and depth of the music from all corners of the world underlining the robust health of jazz a quarter of the way into the 21st century. Northbound Pernille Bevort Gateway Music There is a poetic economy, a focused intensity, to these intimate, moving narratives. But do not be fooled, for when the siren calls her, Bévort leads this rhythmically ...
