How to use Pixlr

A lead photo that represents your article is uploaded from the article submission form. The photo is horizontally oriented and should be sized to 936 pixels wide by 562 pixels high. If you start with a portrait photo greater than 936 pixels wide, you will need to significantly crop the photo to fit the format.



When uploading a photo via the article submission form, All About Jazz will automatically create two additional photos: the representative 300x180 pixel image (that is found in the MORE section appended to the bottom of the article) and the 100x100 pixel image (found on the various landing pages).

To ensure your uploaded photo looks its best, it's important to get comfortable with a photo editing tool. While you might already have experience with one, there are several options available, such as Pixlr, Pixelmator, and Photoshop. Keep in mind that many of these tools require payment or a subscription, and some free options may limit the number of photos you can process each day.

For our purposes, we recommend Pixlr because:

• It's web-based, meaning you can access it via your browser on any device with an internet connection.
• It allows you to edit up to three photos a day for free, which is perfect for your needs on All About Jazz.

By familiarizing yourself with Pixlr or a similar editor, you��ll be well-equipped to prepare your lead article photo.



How to size a photo to 936x562 pixels using Pixlr

• Go to the Pixlr editor page.
• Click the "Open Image" button and select the photo you want to process (make sure it is greater than 936 pixels wide).
• Once opened, click Image on the navigation bar then Image Size from the dropdown.
• Set the width value in the overlay box to 936 and click the Apply button (the height value will change accordingly.
• Click the crop icon on the far right. When you do you can use your mouse to slide the top or bottom to crap the image to 562 pixels high (and keep an eye on the height value in the secondary bar as you slide (tip: when cropping the height, make sure the subject is properly centered).
• Once you have the crop where you want it, click the Apply button.
• Once sized to 936x562 pixels, click Filter on the navigation bar, then Details from the dropdown then Sharpen.
• Set the Amount to 6 then click the Apply button.
• Now that your photo has been sized and processed properly, click File on the navigation bar then select Save. For JPG file, slide the bar to 100% before clicking the Save button.
• Once saved, you can upload the image via the article submission form.
