He has released two albums featuring the same eight original compositions played in two different settings, one with a quintet and one with a big band. The drive and muscular rhythmic pulse of his writing come through in both configurations.

Some tracks have a more overt funk influence than others. "Sound Evidence" 's simmering cool is built from irregular drum beats, stuttering horns, and thick bass with Fender Rhodes lines additionally embedded in the mix while "Sabotage" is a straight ahead cocktail of hip beats, soul riffs and wrangling horn chases. "Gibbs St." ends the album with the band taking a leisurely stroll over the leader's slow but steady pace. In this incarnation, Schonig's tunes come out tight and effortlessly swinging.

Some arrangements closely follow the lines of the small group versions while others get more fanciful. Ferber's treatment of "Sabotage," Daversa's version of "NUTS" and Hobgood's take on "Eight Twenty" build brassy extensions around the sound of the quintet versions. Holober's "Climb" arrangement adds an eerie, atonal layer to the group playing and leaves space for rich sax solos by
