Lizz Wright and Danilo Perez Jazz 100 at the Merriam Theater
ByJazz 100: The Music of Dizzy, Ella, Mongo & Monk
Merriam Theater
Kimmel Center Presents
Philadelphia, PA
September 30, 2016
This well conceived theme-based jazz show anticipated the 100th birthdays and celebrated the music of four jazz icons all coincidentally born in 1917:

Dizzy Gillespie
trumpet1917 - 1993

Ella Fitzgerald
vocals1917 - 1996

Mongo Santamaria
percussion1917 - 2003

Thelonious Monk

Lizz Wright

The idea was to tell a story of people coming together in unity, whether in the Civil Rights movement or in Latin-jazz collaborations. A further aim was to capture the music and sentiments of the four icons while showing how far jazz has come since then. The instrumentalists were well-chosen for their grasp of the legacy while pushing the envelope in original and complex ways. The group included versatile and innovative post-Coltrane saxophonist

Perez' interpretations of Thelonious Sphere Monk, as evidenced in his recording Panamonk (Imoulse/GRC, 1996), are a cut above most recaps of Monk's spherical triangulations. Perez deeply understands Monk's creative thrusts and translates them into personal statements of his own with advanced harmonies and rhythmic inflections. Such was indeed the case with Perez' solo improvisations on "'Round Midnight," which gave renewed beauty to this overplayed standard. Chris Potter's arrangement and solos for another Monk standard, "Off Minor," honored Monk's extended stint with

Reconciliation implies diversity, and one of Perez' lasting contributions to jazz has been to bring together his own Panamanian origins with other Latin music, emphasizing the profound connection between Euro-American jazz and music from Africa, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. To honor Mongo Santamaria, the group performed his iconic "Afro Blue" in an arrangement that gave all the players an opportunity to show their wares. In particular, trombonist Gordon soloed in diverse idioms from

To conclude, the group went (far) out with Avishai Cohen's free-wheeling arrangement of Gillespie's "Manteca." At the end, an extended and mind-blowing stint of simultaneous improvisations by the three horns, and, in effect, the entire septet, brought the audience to its feet, and the group provided them with an encore, an amalgam of Monk's "Evidence" and "Four in One." This was the premiere performance of a road show that will come to cities nationwide, including Princeton, Stanford, CA, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and elsewhere. It is well worth attending just to hear the musicians involved and to get a genuine sense of how mainstream jazz evolved over the time span of over half a century since Monk, Fitzgerald, et al, shaped the jazz legacy.
