John Sharpe's Best Releases of 2024

by John Sharpe
From the 200 or so discs that I heard in 2024, here are the ten new issues and three gems saved from obscurity, which gave me the most pleasure. As always these selections are entirely subjective, and take no account of the many other albums which I would no doubt have loved if I had heard ...
John Blum / David Murray / Chad Taylor: The Recursive Tree

by John Sharpe
Three equally potent partners combine in a spontaneous and intense outpouring on The Recursive Tree. Neither reedman David Murray or drummer Chad Taylor require much introduction. Murray has been a colossus on the scene ever since he first erupted onto the stages of lofts across Manhattan back in 1976. Taylor has become increasingly ubiquitous, recognized as ...

HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training is a series of repeated all-out efforts with a brief recover time in between each effort. This ...

Since 1975, the Black Saint and Soul Note record labels have been a major force in documenting the growth of American avant-garde jazz. This program samples two hours of music from their diverse catalog. It includes work from artists who had long associations with the labels such as Muhal Richard Abrams and David Murray as well ...
Sarah Murcia, Thumbscrew & Giancarlo Tossani

by Maurice Hogue
There's lots of new releases sampled in this episode. The critics' darlings, Thumbscrew is back and meeting their usual standards of creativity and originality. Popular French bassist Sarah Murcia sings off-beat stuff on her new Eyeballing, while the Finnish quartet Alder Ego stretches the boundaries on their latest. The pandemic looms over the new release by ...
