Chico O'Farrill

Born:
For over half a century, he was one of a pantheon of innovators who fused the soul-wrenching rhythms of African Cuba with the sweet harmonies of American jazz. Longtime admirers of the Latin jazz genre know O’Farrill as a master of sweeping, symphonic compositions that embraced his love of Debussy, Stravinsky, and the mambo; and as a bandleader who keeps alive the roar of a full dance band, as conductor of the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band, which played New York’s Birdland every Sunday night. For much of his career he worked quietly in the background, crafting music that became a showcase for others: "Undercurrent Blues" for Benny Goodman; “Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite” for Charlie Parker and the Machito orchestra; “Trumpet Fantasy,” premiered at Lincoln Center in 1996 with soloist Wynton Marsalis; and more than 80 arrangements for Count Basie
Arturo O’Farrill: The Arts Belong to the People

by Steven Roby
The first thing you notice about Arturo O'Farrill is how completely he turns purpose into sound. Whether he's speaking about water, memory, or the way a room breathes during a concert, the GRAMMY-winning pianist and composer treats music as a living system--one that welcomes humor, fury, and community in equal measure. That sensibility powers his new ...
Adam O'Farrill: For These Streets

by Mark Corroto
Trumpeter and composer Adam O'Farrill distills a heady mix of inspirations into For These Streets, the debut release from his new octet. Drawing on music, literature and the ambiance of the 1930s, the album reflects his immersion in the era--Henry Miller's prose, Charlie Chaplin's City Lights, and the sonic worlds of Stravinsky, Ravel, Carlos Chávez and ...
Jed Levy: Faces and Places

by Jack Kenny
This is a beautiful album that is fired up right from the start. The sound of the tenor is faintly reminiscent of Warne Marsh. There is no seeking after angularity. Jed Levy's way with melody is completely natural and integrated into the quintet, though there are surprises all the way through the improvisations. Jed ...
Arturo O'Farrill: It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Sting!

by Leo Sidran
Arturo O'Farrill was, by his own admission, a long-haired, stoned-out freaky kid" of 19, playing piano in a small bar in upstate New York when he caught the ear of pianist and composer Carla Bley. She took a chance on him and invited him to join her band--a pivotal moment for the young musician who, at ...
Trish Clowes & Ross Stanley: Journey to Where

by Ian Patterson
After four albums together in saxophonist Trish Clowes' quartet My Iris, Clowes and pianist Ross Stanley peel away from the quartet for this intimate duo outing, recorded in Wigmore Hall, London in July 2021. A studio album by design, there is, nevertheless, an unguarded, searching quality to these exchanges which is more in keeping with the ...

2000 Rewind

by Chris M. Slawecki
You can drive yourself crazy trying to determine the best" releases of this or any other year. But this past year, perhaps like every year, presented admirable music of excellent quality that did not stir my passions. And it also brought music of dubious quality that I enjoyed almost despite myself (this year, heaven forgive me, ...
3x3: Jazz Trios Playful and Pensive

by John Chacona
Can we finally retire the assertion that we are living in a Golden Age of the jazz piano trio? It seems like every month brings trio dates of such imagination and accomplishment as to render superlatives beside the point. These three recordings released in an eight-week period in Spring 2023 are a reminder that one of ...
