Damon Smith

Born:
Double bass, Improviser. Born Damon Jesse Smith on oct. 17th, 1972 in Spokane, WA. Did "freestyle bmx" bicycle riding from age 13 to 23. Started music in 1991, under the influence of Mike Watt (fIREHOSE & the minutemen) on fender bass. Lead several punk/art rock combos until 1994. Upon receiving Peter Kowald's landmark lp "Duos;Europa," Damon sold the fender bass and concentrated solely on double bass and free music. Damon's music is rooted in the tradition of "free jazz", with most of his professional experience coming from work with the orchestras and small ensembles of alto saxophonist marco eneidi, however, he is very interested in all the manifestations of free improvised music (jazz rooted or not!) around the world

Keefe Jackson / Jakob Heinemann / Adam Shead: Stinger

by Mark Corroto
Stinger marks the debut release from the trio of saxophonist Keefe Jackson, bassist Jakob Heinemann and drummer Adam Shead. Yet, from the cohesion and interplay captured on this recording, it is clear these three musicians have collaborated extensively. The group exemplifies the Chicago ethos of collective creation--both in compositional approach and improvisational execution. Jackson and Heinemann ...

This recording from the Moers Festival in May 2023, Germany, is dedicated to the late Hans Schneider. Naturally, that list also honors ...
Danny Kamins: Pracownia Wschodnia/The Creamery

by Mark Corroto
Texas saxophonist Danny Kamins heads to church. Musically speaking, that means the sacred sound of John Coltrane. But before he can fully enter that space, he must first run the gauntlet and undergo a kind of sonic purification. This process is reflected in both his discography and the opening moments of Pracownia Wschodnia / The Creamery. ...
Jason Stein: Anchors

by Giuseppe Segala
Marilyn Crispell: Fearless, Deeply Sensitive and Shaping the Moment

by Dean Nardi
As Marilyn Crispell talked about her multitude of recent recordings, either solo or with this trio or that quartet, she mentioned needing to pack her bags before going out on tour. She has lived in Woodstock, New York since 1977 and is comfortable there. When I'm at home, not out recording, I look out in the ...
Roscoe Mitchell: One Head Four People

by Fran Kursztejn
"I'm always trying to take what's there and, in the end, make it sound like nothing's missing from it," Roscoe Mitchell relates in a 2016 interview, in relation to his string of European solo concerts, yet the statement is just as relevant to the jazz giant's newest studio release, One Head Four People, as any other. ...
Music from Favourite Recordings played on One Man’s Jazz in 2024

by Maurice Hogue
Adding to the countless lists of best-of"s for 2024, here are almost three hours of music from my favourite recordings of 2024. (See the One Man's Jazz web site for the full list.) The only album not among the favourites is the very recently received Landloper by famed bassist Arild Andersen; it's solo deliciousness.
