Anthony Wilson Nonet At Joe Henderson Lab

by Steven Roby
Anthony Wilson Nonet Joe Henderson Lab San Francisco, CA September 4, 2025 Anthony Wilson chose a high-wire debut for his first time leading his own band at SFJAZZ: nine musicians packed onto the Joe Henderson Lab's stage--roughly 20 by 12 feet--to open the 2025-26 season. The Nonet fit like a well-designed puzzle. More importantly, the sound breathed. The Lab's acoustics let dense voicings bloom without smear, and the band used the intimacy to make ...

by Steven Roby
Guitarist-composer Anthony Wilson is circling back to a format that has shaped his voice since the beginning: the nonet. His new live album, House of the Singing Blossoms (Sam First Records, 2025)), documents two nights at Los Angeles listening room Sam First and sets the stage for four shows at SFJAZZ's Joe Henderson Lab on September 4-5. The return to nine pieces, Wilson says, is not nostalgia--it is renewal! The first band that I recorded with was a ...

by Bob Osborne
The arrival of a new Anthony Wilson album with his interpretation of Joe Zawinul's In A Silent Way" lead me to dig out other versions--a live rendition by Weather Report plus the two versions from the The Complete In A Silent Way Sessions box set release by Miles Davis. Zawinul's haunting melody is the centrepiece of all four versions on the show. In addition, some re-released music from John Hicks, and new releases from across the wide world of jazz.

by Pierre Giroux
Sooner Or Later is jazz vocalist Natalie Jacob's debut release. It is a refreshing addition to the jazz landscape, blending classic Great American Songbook tunes and bossa nova standards. Produced by Grammy Award winner Scotty Barnhart, the album benefits from the contributions of an outstanding ensemble, including Barnhart on trumpet, pianist Tamir Hendelman, guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist Carlitos Del Puerto, drummer Clayton Cameron and percussionist Kevin Winard. This all-star lineup created a rich backdrop for Jacob's compelling vocal interpretations.

by Nicholas F. Mondello
The Path of a Tear from UK vocalist Jo Harrop contains eleven fine selections that tell tales of love and its vagaries and vulnerabilities. Opener Beautiful Fools" is moderately-paced, a laid-back groove with a great deal of presence. Harrop dances across the poignant lyrics. Anthony Wilson delivers an appropriately tasty guitar solo. Whiskey or the Truth," slow and soulful, has all the earmarks, phrasing and chord progression of a soulful country-gospel tune. There is imagery presented in both the title ...

by John Eyles
The Path of a Tear is Durham-born singer and songwriter Jo Harrop's fifth album release on the Lateralize label, which was established in 2018. Harrop's first album was Songs For The Late Hours (Lateralize, 2019), a download-only release on which she and her guitar, piano and bass trio arranged and played a selection of Tin Pan Alley songs, including the Gershwins' How Long Has This Been Going On," which showcased Harrop's voice well. Her second album, the first ...
