About the Album
For her first recording in five years, visionary British composer/pianist Claire Cope and her 11-piece band Ensemble C pay tribute to pioneering women with the powerful recording “Every Journey.” The uplifting track “Isabel” is named for Isabel Godin des Odonais, the first known woman to traverse the length of the Amazon River. Cope discovered Odonais story by reading Adventuresses, a book by writer and explorer Jacki Hill-Murphy that tells the stories of 18th and 19th-century female explorers. Odonais’ spirit is captured by Cope’s stellar writing and playing and features the rich musicianship of percussionist Jack McCarthy along with baritone saxophonist Rob Cope, trombonist Anoushka Nanguy, trumpeter Freddie Gavit, and captivating vocalist Brigitte Beraha.
