About the Album
The first single, “String” is one of the more rambunctious, feisty songs on World of Difference. It opens with bassist Ross Gallagher improvising amidst an angular, almost serial guitar ostinato, ducking and diving around the uneven terrain. Fisher-Lochhead's alto emerges as a sort of mischievous commentator on Gallagher's solo, egging him on, provoking. After a brief composed transition, we are brought back to this rambunctious space, and the horns enter with a playful and irreverent pointillistic texture (which, because of its resemblance to a flock of chickens pecking or a bowl of popcorn popping, became known as the "popcorn chicken" section) Ryan Blotnick's guitar signals into a new theme, one that continues to propel the groove through a seemingly irregular rhythmic pattern, only to be joined by the heavy, almost punk-rock groove of drummer / percussionist Brian Shankar Adler, firmly rooting the piece in its forward momentum. Trumpeter Emma Stanley unleashes over this bombastic groove, bringing the intensity to its highest point. Shortly thereafter, like the breaking of a storm, “String” transitions into a truly unexpected ballad texture. The band states this new melody one time, basking in the lush harmonies and slowness of the new pulse.
