Manuel Caliumi
Manuel Caliumi, italian saxophonist, graduated cum laude at “A. Boito” Conservatory in Parma studying with Roberto Bonati, Emiliano Vernizzi, Roberto Dani and Alberto Tacchini. He earned his Master's Degree in Jazz at "F. Venezze" Conservatory in Rovigo (Fabio Petretti, Stefano Onorati, Massimo Morganti...) cum laude and academic mention.
During his musical training he took masterclasses with musicians like: Joe Lovano, Misha Alperin, Eddie Gomez, Barre Phillips, Stefano Battaglia, Evan Tate, Tor Yttredal, Sidsel Endresen, Morten Halle.
In 2014 he attended "Veneto Jazz" workshop with some teachers from “New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music”: John Ellis, Rory Stuart, Kevin Hays and Marco Tamburini. "Arcevia Jazz"(Scott Hall, Mike Rossi, Simone La Maida, Massimo Morgant) where he won a scolarship for the Columbia College Chicago - Music Department.
In Chicago he took lessons with Jarrard Harris, Peter Saxe, Scott Hall and a masterclass with Dave Douglas, having the chance to play with him at the “Jazz Showcase” club.
In the same period he studied in New York with David Binney, Melissa Aldana and Loren Stillman.
During the following years he attended the "Berklee Clinics - Umbria Jazz Festival" (Dino Govoni, Jeff Stout), "Nuoro Jazz" (Joe Lovano, Emanuele Cisi, Dado Moroni, Paolino Dalla Porta, Stefano Bagnoli) where he was selected as a finalist of the "Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani" and "Siena Jazz" (Avishai Coen, Theo Blackman, Achille Succi, Will Winson, Maurizio Giammarco, Ben Wendel, Harish Raghavan, Gerald Clayton).
Beetween 2017 and 2018 he won the “Concorso Stefano Cerri” with “Archipelagos” with which he recorded “In your thoughts”, published by UR Records. Then he was a finalist of the “Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani” and winner of the “Concorso Chicco Bettinardi.”
The same year he won the national audition as lead alto saxophone of the "ONJ – Orchestra Nazionale Jazz "conducted by Pino Iodice with which he did three italian tourneè and another one in Tel Aviv.
He played in Umbria Jazz Festival with Offset Quartet as selected band of the “Conad Jazz Contest”. The next year he won the “Barga Jazz Contest” with the Valentina Fin Trio and was awarded with the “Premio Luca Flores as best soloist.
In 2021 he won the Premio Marco Tamburini for jazz soloists and took part in the "Laboratori Permanenti di Ricerca Musicale" held by Stefano Battaglia at Siena Jazz Academy.
With Hack Out! Trio was guest of the Italian Institute of Culture in Paris for the entire month of november collaborating with the pianist Jacky Terrasson. In the same period he performed in several important venues and cultural institutes among Belgium (IIC Bruxelles), Germany (IIC Koln), Netherlands, France, Norway (IIC Oslo), Italy. He had the chance to be part of another artist residency at the Canadian Cultural Centre of Paris (alongside Jad Salameh and Claire Parsons) and to cooperate with Francesco Diodati and Fulvio Sigurtà.
