drumsDesmond has a unique approach to holiday music. She chooses tunes, arrangements, and renditions that emphasize the season’s diverse emotions – happy, frenetic, reflective, and sadin the jazz tradition. Her approach is a welcome contrast to the usual holiday fare of Christmas carols and the dozen or so tunes that one hears ad infinitum on the radio and TV. For example, at Chris, she included a relatively underplayed Irving Berlin song, “When Winter Comes” in addition to the classic “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” She dropped in her own sophisticated lyrics to David Wheat’s upbeat “Better Than Anything.” And she included a beautiful ballad, “Love Turns Winter to Spring” by Matt Dennis. The album includes Joni Mitchell’s ballad of loss, “River” the more hopeful “You Must Believe in Spring” by Michel LeGrand, and
