Ariane Racicot: Danser avec le feu

by Dan McClenaghan
The piano trio is a tried and true jazz format. Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, Red Garland and Ahmad Jamal made their marks there. Also Bill Evans, Marc Copland and Brad Mehldau, and so many others. And let us not forget Fred Hersch and a hundred or so more. Some artists, feeling constrained by the ...
Rachel Eckroth & John Hadfield: Speaking In Tongues

by Mike Jurkovic
There is something wistful and empowering about wanderlust pianist/composer/electronics Rachel Eckroth's acoustic sensibility that holds a lot of sway with many of her listeners. This falls into direct opposition to her electronic side which, as cool as it sounds, can lean a tad too easily into the blurry, pop-oriented tendencies of Vangelis, Kraftwerk, or Gary Newman. ...

by Chris May
Norway's Espen Eriksen Trio is the first Scandinavian piano trio to enjoy a measure of sustained international success since Sweden's Esbjörn Svensson Trio's high-profile run was cut short by Svensson's death in 2008. There was the Esbj?rn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.)'s final completed album Leucocyte (ACT Music) that same year, later followed by the equally exploratory 301 (ACT, 2012) which ...

Pasquale Stafano: Sparks

by Ian Patterson
Italian pianist Pasquale Stafano is perhaps best known for the Nuevo Tango Ensemble which he co-founded in 1999 with bandoneonist Gianni Iorio, with whom he has also released a couple of fine duo albums, namely the tango-inspired Nocturno (Enja Records, 2017) and Mediterranean Tales (Enja Records, 2020). The centenary of Astor Piazzolla's birth might have seemed ...
