We hope you will join The George Gee Big Band for a night of swingin’ big band jazz from their CD Settin’ The Pace" (featuring the music of Frank Foster) on Tuesday, April 26th, 2005 in the Gillespie Auditorium at the New York City Baha'i Center at 53 East 11th Street (between University Place & Broadway). There will be two shows: 8:00 and 10:00 p.m.
The George Gee Big Band - a well-known musical entity in the international and domestic swing/lindyhop dance circuit - made a big splash in the jazz" world - with their 2004 CD release on GJazz Records of Settin’ The Pace." Breaking into the Top Ten jazz charts last November, the recording has been garnering a wide variety of critical acclaim and rave reviews. This special recording project is a heartfelt collaboration between legendary big band composer/arranger Frank Foster and bandleader George Gee. Besides providing some choice selections of his arrangements, Frank also directed the band and was involved in every aspect of the production of Settin’ The Pace."
Bandleader George Gee celebrates a quarter-century in the big band business" at this special concert, as it was on April 26th, 1980 in which he first humbly performed with his swing jazz orchestra at his alma mater of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It has been quite a delightful roller coaster ride ever since," exclaims George Gee, and with this new CD, it’s an honor to have the big band receive additional accolades!" The collaboration with musical maestro Frank Foster was a natural, originating with George’s relationship and mentoring by the legendary Count Basie in the early 1980s.
This special New York City concert performance by The George Gee Big Band will feature a special appearance by Grammy nominee vocalist Carla Cook, performing her selections from the recording. Musicians appearing at the concert will include:
