Iyer recupera così quella dimensione ritmico/tessiturale delle sue migliori prove in trio, proiettandola dentro profondità in cui baluginano i fantasmi urbani M-Base che tanto hanno contribuito alla formazione della sua estetica. Un pezzo su tutti il magmatico "Nope." Ma anche la cavalcata cinetica di "Down to the Wire" o la ossessiva "Into Action."
In questo lavoro Iyer sembra "riportare a casa" molte delle sue esplorazioni, compattando felicemente la naturale tensione centrifuga della ricerca e al tempo stesso lasciando alla sensibilità dei singoli strumentisti (davvero eccellenti in particolare i contributi di Sorey e di Shim, non è certo una novità...) il compito di infondere una multiforme umanità al suono complessivo del sestetto.
Ci sono anche pagine più riflessive, come "For Amiri Baraka" o l'inquietante "Wake," che crea la giusta sospensione per la frenesia ritmica di "Good on the Ground," prima della conclusiva, avviluppante, "Threnody."
Nelle scarne note di copertina, Iyer scrive che si augura che la musica di questo Far from Over sia portatrice di un "qualcosa" anche piccolo, anche lungo un solo istante, che però contenga la consapevolezza della necessità di continuare il cammino per l'uguaglianza e la giustizia.
Di certo quella di questo disco è una musica forte, calibrata con grande sapienza sulle linee invisibili che uniscono i migliori esiti del jazz di oggi a un pubblico che chiede sempre più "verità" in quello che ascolta. ">
