Il repertorio rimane saldamente legato a brani che sono stati arrangiati da Gil Evans nel corso della sua lunga carriera. In due casi i brani scelti per questo album sono vere e proprie composizioni di Evans e, specialmente nel caso di quel "Times of the Barracudas" posto giustamente in apertura, è proprio qui che l'orchestra di Truesdell raggiunge il suo massimo. Il sottile confine fra tradizione e modernità, in questo caso, oscilla nel modo giusto e non si lascia trascinare all'indietro.
In altri brani, a cominciare da uno scintillante "Davenport Blues" carico di retorica trombettistica, fa capolino uno dei rischi impliciti di tutte le operazioni di rilettura: se si guarda troppo all'indietro ci si ritrova con una sorta di torcicollo che penalizza un po' il risultato finale. Un rischio che Gil Evans non ha mai corso, proprio perché per lui era essenziale avanzare innovando.
